When U.S. airspace is suddenly closed, 38 international flights are diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, nearly doubling its population overnight. The stranded passengers—known as “come from aways,” the local term for visitors—are forced to stay for several days while the world processes the tragedy.
